Contemporary PR and Social Media
Comm 384, Fall 2018
George Mason University
It's all about strategy.
It's all about purpose-driven content.
It's all about engagement.
I taught this course initially as a "special topics" public relations course in 2014. In that fall semester, there were only three students who had a Twitter account and Instagram was on no one's radar. The world of social media we will examine in fall 2018 is vastly different. Everything has changed in those 48 months. While Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn remain at the top of the social media leaderboard, Instagram has seen a meteoric rise, other sites have fallen or failed and even the once indomitable Facebook is vulnerable. The shift to mobile use is nearly complete and billions of people are now regular users. Our 45th president daily demonstrates the power and influence of social media on world politics and society. It is evolving and it is exciting.
